JC La Verde. First responder. Father. Coach.
The short version: an alligator, a hospital bed, a book written breathing through a tube, and a long climb back. The long version is the rest of this page.
The Alligator
The origin isn't a metaphor. There was an actual reptile, an actual bite, and an actual moment of decision in water JC had no business being in. He survived it, which is the point — but only barely, which is also the point.
For a long time after, the story was something he told around fires. It wasn't yet the spine of anything. It was just the day he didn't die. The room had not been built yet.
Firewatch
Years later — a different uniform, a different night — JC wrote a piece called Firewatch about the quiet hours when most men learn whether they're built for the load. It travelled further than he expected, and it pulled men out of corners he didn't know they were sitting in.
"Firewatch is where you learn whether you can stand in the dark without making it about you."
Through The Tube
He wrote his first book breathing through a tube. Not as a metaphor for grit, and not as a marketing line — as a literal description of how it got done. Some chapters were dictated, some were typed with one hand at three in the morning, some were rewritten the week after he could finally stand for more than ten minutes.
By the time the book was finished he had a different question than the one he started with. The question wasn't "how do men get inspired?" It was: "why do inspired men so rarely make it to Tuesday?"
The Room
JC Defeats is the answer he stopped being able to avoid. The 90-day room. The rig. The BPC method. Defeat X for the expeditions. Warrior's Notes for the front door. Nurturing Resilience for the fathers and the foster teens — because the kid version of him needed a dad more than he needed a coach.
Faith is in there. Quietly. The way it should be. The cross is in the signature, not the headline.
The next chapter is yours.
Pick your way in. JC built the room because somebody needed to.
The room is small on purpose.
